I thought the same thing after reading about how “good” it looks on the FP.

I like it.

Design head: “We need to do something edgy with the C/D pillar, something unique like the Veloster or the CTS wagon!”

The beyon-c-pillar. More thicc than average.

My exact thought when I first saw the car. Fucking hideous and massively impractical due to how it’ll impact visibility.

Finally the Camaro has some competition!
Solution is either get the sedan or suck it up and make sure you get Blind spot monitoring and/or those small mirrors. Most new cars have terrible B and C pillar visibility anyways.
I like the overall design a lot except for the Thicc C. And the premium interior, the 2.5 with AWD and Manual makes it a compelling package .

I love the design I don’t even care that it would be a hassle. I want one really, really, badly.

But it is so bold and dynamic and edgy and different and not a nornal car . And if you buy one, you’ll be the same, say bye bye to being a cube welling drone !

It’s gross and awful.
The war on windows must stop. Why are there 8 inches of sheet metal between the door handles and glass?

More cargo space and more aerodynamic? I would still probably buy the hatch instead of the sedan, but this would make me more likely to get an Elantra GT hatch. Either way I can’t afford a new car, so it is a moot point.

Yup, it’ s horrid.

I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING!
It’s like the designed the sedan but it took too long. So they flipped the concave curve on the back that forms the rear glass and fairly horizontal bootlid to a convex one. Voila. Hatchback!

Are we looking at the same car?

Agree, I hate it. Was really confused when I saw the fp article about how good it looked.

Ooh the manual is not only available with the base engine? Can you get it with the fancy new SkyActive-X one too?

Not sure, but at least a ccording to C&D they say it will launch with the 2.5 and if Manual AWD are available it means they will be paired with that engine. I doubt if they will give us an AWD+Manual combo.
“Mazda says that the 2019 3 will launch in the U.S. with a Skyactiv 2.5-liter inline-four mated to either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission. The company isn’t discussing power figures at this point, but we expect a similar output to the current 2.5-liter’s 184 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive will be optional, a first for the 3. Later in the 3's run, a new Skyactiv-X inline-four with Mazda’s compression-ignition-capable tech will join the lineup promising significantly improved fuel economy. Other markets will get smaller-displacement gas and diesel engine options, but the only one that we think has a chance of reaching the U.S. is the 2.0-liter inline-four, which eventually could be offered as a lower-cost base engine.”

Ugh, is driver visibility as bad as it looks to be from here? I suppose it has blind spot monitoring, but that only helps when you’re moving forward, not backing out of a parking space. How about b ackup camera(s)? Is the camera view wide enough to check for cross-traffic?

I like it, but it’s verrrrrry similar to the Alfa Romeo Brera (
Giugiaro design).
Supposedly the new 3 was designed by
Yasutake Tsuchida, but someone ought to check is laptop for Brera design files ;)

No, because he’s looking over his shoulder and can only see a massive C-pillar.

Why are you mad about the thick pillar? Don’t you guys have blind-spot monitors?
